THURMAN, Richard {I4669} (b. 1741, d. AFT 15 AUG 1803)
Given Name: Richard
Note: Richard Thurman, Jr. must have had a venturesome spirit when he firststruck out
on his own to make his place in the world. The 1763 HalifaxCo. VA Deed Book

Co. VA. Richard Thurman, Jr. would have been about 21 or 22years old at this
time.

A researcher, Paul Thurman states that Richard Thurman, Jr.& Nathan Thurman,
his brother, both moved to Pittsylvania Co. about 1767. Asearch of church
parish records for the counties of Prince Edward, Hanover,Halifax, and

THURMAN, Nathan Richard I {I4673} (b. 17 JAN 1743, d. ABT 1825)
Given Name: Nathan Richard
Note: Nathan Thurman, a Virginia planter and Baptist preacher, born inLouisa Co, VA., January 17th, 1743, was a son of Richard and SarahThurman; his ancestors came of good Saxon stock;...He was a volunteerin the Indian wars which preceeded the Revolution, and he bore armsand a patriotic part in the larger struggle for our liberty &independence. Hanover Co. became Louisa Co. in middle 1743. Recordsshow that Nathan's parents, Richard Thurman & Sarah (Farmer?), bought300 acres of land south of the Appomatox River up Mayes Creek onDecember 10, 1756. It is believed that Richard Thurman moved fromLouisa Co., Virginia to Prince Edward Co. in 1756. So this would placeNathan Thurman's birth in Louisa Co., Virginia.

"August 5th, 1760, Nathan Thurman married Rebecca Jennings, of LouisaCo.,VA, and Heaven blessed them with twelve children, nearly all ofwhom lived to advanced ages. Of these, Pleasant was born inPittsylvania Co., Virginia, October 23rd, 1783, and died atChillicothe, Ohio, February 13th, 1856." He was the father of AllenGranberry Thurman the U.S. Senator from Ohio.

A researcher, Paul Thurman states that Richard Thurman, Jr. & NathanThurman his brother both moved to Pittsylvania Co. about 1767. Asearch of church parish records for the counties of Prince Edward,Hanover and Pittsylvania in Virginia may yield some answers. It isbelieved by me that Nathan Thurman moved to Pittsylvania Co., Virginiaabout 1776 because of the following record.

Pittsylvania Co., VA Deed Book 4, pg. 431 shows on November 27, 1777Richard Thurman, Jr. conveying to Nathan Thurman of Pittsylvania Co VAone Negro fellow named Gilbert, 11 head of cattle, 2 sheep, featherbed, furniture, and all movable affects now in possession of RichardThurman, Jr., including all crops for the sum of 150 pounds currentmoney. Witnesses: John Babbitt, Joshua Abston, James Mitchell &Littleberry Paterson. It is assumed that James Mitchell is the husbandof Lydia Hamrick the daughter of Setha Benjamin Hamrick.

On November 16, 1778 the Prince Edward Co VA Deed Book 6, pg.185 showsNathan & his wife Rebecca selling 200 acres to Fergus Mann. One yearlater on October 2, 1779 the VA
Grants Book "A" , page 24 shows Nathan Thurman owning 669 Acres inPittsylvania Co VA on both sides of Old Women's Creek, a tributary ofthe Staunton (Roanoake) River. (Grant signed by Govenor of Virginia,Thomas Jefferson at Williamsburg). Was this Nathan Thurman's Grant forhis Military Service during the Indian Wars??!!

A request for information from the Virginia Baptist Historical Societyshows a Nathan Thurman
was "a candidate for preacher" at Valentine Creek Church (RoanokeBaptist Association) in
Pittsylvania County in 1782, and this may be the Nathan we areconcerned with; it also indicates probable residence in PittsylvaniaCounty by at least 1782.

On the 1783 Pittsylvania Co. VA Court Records Book 5, Pg 84 is thisrecord. "Nathan Thurman and Thomas Davis his security, indebted to thechurchwardens of Cambden parish for 10 pounds each. Nathan ordered tokeep bastard child of Ann Thurman from being charge to (of?) parish."

Prince Edward Co VA Deed Bk 7, p. 23, shows Richard Thurman Jr.selling 300 acres to Nathan Thurman on July 19,1784 land located onthe south side of Appomatox River. Both parties living in PittsylvaniaCounty at this time.

On September 30, 1788 Nathan Thurman of Pittsylvania Co VA conveys asa gift deed and for
110 pounds, 310 acres on the south side of the Appomatox River toWilliam Lee of Prince
Edward Co VA.

The 1796 Pittsylvania Co VA Deed Bk 13, p.180, shows Nathan ThurmanSr. buying 170 acres on the Staunton River and Valentine Creek, nearTerrill's lines, from James Doss and Nanny (Nancy) his wife. Salewitnessed by Benjamin Terrill, William Cannafax and James Broughill.

December 19, 1798 Nathan Sr. & Nathan Jr. were witnesses for the Willof James George, Sr. of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. James George Sr.was the grandfather of James H. George who married Setha Hamrick'sdaughter Sarah. Part of the property discription names Nathan Thurmanas a Neighbor: To my beloved daughter Mary Henderson 350 acres whichjoins Barber's, Parker's and Thurman's lines on Ceder branch. At thedecease of my wife, I give to said Mary Henderson a negro girl Rose.

Pittsylvania Co VA Old Surveys Bk 2, June 9, 1800: "Pursuant to anorder of Pittsylvania May
court 1800 surveyed the land in controversy between James Doss, NathanThurman and John
Parrott lying on Staunton River and Beachtree Creek containing 204acres..."

The 1804 Pittsylvania Co VA Deed Bk 14, p.147, shows James Morris andNancy his wife of
Barnwell District SC selling to Nathan Thurman Sr. of Pitts. Co., 204acres land on south side of Staunton River in Pitts. Co.

Pittsylvania Co. VA Deeds and Wills, Bk 11, p.292, 21 Apr 1806: Willof Richard Thurman
presented and recorded on motion of Nathan Thurman & Nathanial Bow,two of the executors.
Will names daughters: Eady Brues, Elizabeth Thurman, Polly Thurman,Rachael Bow, Sally Doss, Susannah Mollins and Frances Abston. Sonsnamed were: Laban Thurman and William Thurman. Will witnessed by:Eliche Barber, Frances Doss, and Laban Farmer on 15 Aug. 1803.

"Rebecca the wife of said Nathan Thurman Sr. cannot conviently travelto our court of our said
county of Pittsylvania to relinquish her right of dower." On 26 Apr1810 Rebecca was examined privately by Joel T. Adams and N. Tucker, apparently to verify her consent. It is assumed that about this timeRebecca died.

In 1811 Nathan Thurman Sr., Ann, Frances, Edith and Sally Doss, all ofPitts. Co., sold 75 acres on Beachtree Creek to David Hunt. (Pitts.Co. VA Deed Bk 17, p.253).

Pittsylvania Co. VA Deed Bk 20, P.189-190, 8 Aug 1816: Benjamin &Sally Terrell of Pitts. Co. sell to Pleasant Thurman of PittsylvaniaCo. 17 acres on the west side of Ward's Road 3 miles from the ferry.Witnessed by: John Minton(?), Nathan Thurman Jr. and Sr., and ColemanBarber.

On November 29th, 1819, when Nathan Thurman set out for Ohio, youngAllen G. Thurman his grandson was barely six years old. In 1820 NathanThurman and his son John Thurman are listed on the census living inFairfield Township of Highland Co., Ohio along with my ggGrandfatherJohn Hamrick from Franklin Co VA. There has never been really goodsubstantial proof of the twelve children of Nathan Thurman except forPleasant Thurman the father of Allen G. Thurman. Clues could surely befound in Nathan's will, if there was one, but it has not been found. He appears on the 1820 census of Highland Co., Ohio, along with manyof his supposed sons, then may have moved to Ross Co., Ohio in 1821 tolive with his son, Pleasant Thurman. Records of the Superior Court ofChancery Docket, Lynchburg, VA indicate that Nathan Thurman, administrator of the James Doss estate, was in Chillicothe, Ohio whenthe last deposition was taken on March 30, 1824. One researcherbelieves Nathan died in Ross Co. and was buried on the grounds of thegovernor, however, no grave marker has ever been found there. NathanThurman apparently died about 1824 (some think he died in 1825 or1826). He is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Chillicothe Ohio, alongwith his son, Pleasant Thurman (d. 1856).
Occupation: Baptist Preacher & Planter
