Death: 16 JUN 1981 Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY
Given Name: Jesse Steger
Note: BIO:Jesse Steger Stayton, this author's maternal grandfather, was born
3-28-1893, in Marion County, Ky. He was the son of Thomas Clellan
Stayton and Martha Ann Hancock. The family lived in the Riley community
of Marion County.
In a letter to the editor of the "Lebanon Enterprise" dated February
5, 1992 my aunt Elizabeth Oldham wrote the following from which
excerpts are taken.
"My father and mother Jesse Steger Stayton and Martha Alice Hays,
were natives of Marion County and were of the pioneer families that
came from Maryland and Virginia.
My father was the son of Thomas Clellan Stayton and Martha (Mattie)
Ann Hancock, daughter of Samuel Hancock and Susan Mouser, of the
Riley Community.
My father was a telegraph operator and general freight agent for
the L&N Railroad at Riley, Ky,during the late 1920's. He worked with
Albert Hourigan and Roy Hourigan who shared the same responsibilities.
I well remember living in Riley in the little yellow house near the
post office down the cinder road along the railroad tracks about a
block from daddy's office...My grandma Stayton was the daughter of
another pioneer family, Samuel Hancock. He donated the land in Marion
County for a school. It was called the "Hancock School" and was
located on what is now called Hancock Road near Riley. He is buried in
" Old Edwards Cemetery", also other members of the Hancocks are
buried there and I feel sure it was a part of his land at one time.
I have in my possession a Souvenir Booklet of the Hancock School.
W.R. Hourigan was the schoolmaster...a roll of the students were the
Stayton children,Flora, Florence, Bertha, and Jesse....
After "The Great Depression " in 1930, my father,Jesse Stayton, left
the L&N Railroad to take a position as a telegraph operator on the K&I
Terminal Railroad in Louisville(Ky.) Soon thereafter, mother and their
five children joined him."
Jesse Stayton stayed on in Louisville. During the 1937 flood he
stayed on duty at the railroad for over a week without the family or
him knowing each others whereabouts. His sons Roland,Jesse Clifton and
Robert Stayton all followed him in the railroad business. He and his
family of 8 children and wife all lived in a large brick house on
Wurtle Ave. in Shively, a suburb of Louisville. I remember him as a
fairly large man about 6'3'', balding with glasses. He had a large
field with a garden behind the house and raised chickens, rabbits and
children. He passed his real estate license test late in life. He
was noted for helping other families down on their luck. I remember
a black man and his sons working on a new house that "Punky"( our
nickname) was building. When my grandfather went to pay him my grand-
mother protested that it was too much. His reply was that the man had
a large family and needed the money. He had his imperfections and was
not above choosing favorites among his children and grandchildren but
he was very much a family man. He died of diabetes and colon cancer
in August of 1966 in Louisville and is buried in Memorial Gardens off
of the Dixie Highway in Shively .

Bro. Stayton was born at Woodlawn ,Ky. on Oct. 18, 1920. He began
his railroad career as a telegrapher on the K&I September 27, 1938,
after learning telegraphy from his father. In 1939 he went to the
Southern Railway and back to the K&I in 1940. After spending 3 years
in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator he returned to the K&I and was

Kay Traenkner, of California; and a son Clifton Stayton of Indiana.

Traenkner, and Eric Stayton.
This was his obituary in "The Train Dispatcher"p. 114.
Also from the Romney Journal and Courier-"Mid-North Food Finders Inc.
must move in 30 days. Its building was sold. Rent will be a problem.
Food Finders paid $175 a month to rent the building at 501 Elston Rd.
from it's former owner Jay Stayton.
Emmett Koehler, food finder volunteer said 'Mr. Stayton was very
interested in our program of helping feed the poor, and when we moved
from our Earl Ave. place, he offered to rent his building to us for
only $175. It worked out well since we didn't have much money to pay
rent.' Stayton died in May, and the building was sold."
This sums up his life. Uncle J.C. ( to us) was a fun and caring
person. He worked hard and played hard. He had a boisterous laugh that
could be heard a long way. He never seemed to not be working at
something but his joy of life was unquenchible.
