CLARK, George Graff {I2668} (b. 10 MAY 1933)
Given Name: George Graff
Note: LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Captain George Graff CLARK, USN

George Graff Clark was born in Baltimore, Maryland, theyoungest of three sons, to Thomas and Elizabeth George Clark. Hegraduated from Severn Preparatory School in 1952, and was accepted tothe United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he graduated witha bachelors degree in Engineering in 1956. In August 1956, he beganflight training at Pensacola, Florida and completed advanced jettraining in combat-type aircraft at Corpus Christi, Texas. He earnedhis Wings and the title of Naval Aviator in late 1957. To qualify asa carrier pilot, he completed six landings on the support aircraftcarrier USS Antietam in the Gulf of Mexico.
The following one-and-a-half years were spent as a FlightInstructor in Memphis, Tennessee. In late 1959, he received orders toOceana, Virginia. He learned how to fly the A4D Skyhawk, andcompleted three Mediterranean cruises on the USS Independence1960-1962. It was from here that he was called to duty, and wasdirected to proceed to Cuba for the Bay of Pigs/Cuban MissileCrisis... ...in late 1962, out of 3,500 candidates, Lt.Clark was selected to attend the Navy Test Pilot School at PatuxentRiver, Maryland. He completed schooling in October 1963 and wasassigned to the Carrier Suitability Branch. Immediately, he wasassigned a project as the Primary Project Test Pilot of the RA5CVigilante aircraft. While stationed here, George was promoted toLieutenant Commander.
In February 1966, LCDR Clark received orders to Sanford, Florida.Following a brief training program to learn the Reconnaissance Systemsof the aircraft, as well as to train with a Bombardier/navigator -- hewas assigned to RVAH-7. This squadron was deployed to the war inVietnam for 10 1/2 months...
...George flew 66 combat missions over North Vietnam, receivingthe Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Three Stars for hisperformance as a pilot in combat.
From 1968 to 1969, he was stationed in the Mediterranean, flyingthe RA5-C ( from the flight deck of the USS Independence.)
All the above flights were without a single air crash. However, while awaiting discharge in 1969, George was on a routine trainingflight in a C-47 (DC-3) to gain engine time for flying for use in hiscivilian life. It was George, the Plane Commander and an enlistedman. On landing, the aircraft commenced fishtailing down the runway. The Plane Commander took the controls as the aircraft was heading at a45-degree angle on the runway heading. The plane got approximately60-80 feet into the air when the left wing stalled. The plane hit theground, rolled several times, came to a stop, and caught on fire.George was unconscious, as he was unstrapped and pulled from theburning plane...fortunately, his injuries were minor and left him withonly a ten-percent disability in his left hand.
Unfortunately, by this time, his age overshadowed his ability tobecome employed by a commercial airline. George moved to Louisville,Kentucky, joined the Naval Reserves, and flew the A4D...and took acivilian job in Food Service Management. In 1973, he received a callfrom the Navy that he had been promoted to Commander, then yet againhe was promoted to Captain in 1980. In 1982 after 26 1/2 years ofservice with the United States Navy, Captain George Graff Clark "hungup his Wings" and spent the following years in marketing andmanagement, and as a Program Consultant for the State of KentuckyDepartment of Education, from which he retired in 1995. George has sixchildren from two prior marriages, and three grandchildren. He metBetty Horton Ludwig in 1988, and they married on 3 September 1993 inGatlinburg, Tennessee. They live in Louisville, Kentucky--with twocats, Hunter Green and Patches Ann Clark!

Footnote: During a 13-year period, George accumulated 550 aircraftcarrier landings. Of the numerous jets he flew, the RA5-C Vigilante, the A4D and A4E Skyhawk were the main ones. Of the numerous medals heearned while an officer and a pilot in the United States Navy, some ofthem are as follows:

"Dear Sis,
I'm answering your letter which I received a few days ago.I'm feeling good and getting along just fine. I bet you are surprisedto hear that I have been shipped overseas. I'm now in the HawaianIslands. This really a beautiful island, it has pineapples, coconuts, and palm trees growing all around. This is the land of grass skirts, just like you see in the travel books.
The trip over here was really swell. The first day out, most ofthe boys got seasick, so I had to go down on K.P. to serve one mealbecause all of the boys were sick.
Today I went into town, Honolulu, and had a very nice time. AfterI learn my way around, I will have more fun. There are all kinds ifpeople here, Chinese, Japanese, Portugese, and all other kinds.
I am now working on K.P. again. I guess that I will get fatterthan I am now. Well, I must close now, don't worry about me because Iknow how to take care of myself. Your loving brother,
James"
