Note: .Most of the early history of the Brockman family was obtained fromThe Brockman Scrapbook. by William E. Brockman. The Brockman familymoved from England to the Barbados due to conflict between theEpiscopal Church and the Catholic Church. The Brockmans wereCatholics. A
descendant of the Brockmans of Orange County, Virginia left a letterquoting Henry Brockman of Maryland as saying "When the Protestantstook over and Catholic services could no longer be held, my fatherwent to the Barbados". Henry Brockman's parents were Thomas Brockmanand Amey (Wyatt or Gatewood).

Henry Brockman apprenticed himself to Capt. John Jordaine in theBarbados. The Captain was en route to America with a shipload ofHollanders. By working for the Captain, Henry Brockman was able to payfor his passage to Maryland. In Maryland Capt. Jordaine madeapplication for land for Henry Brockman, "Whom I have transported toMaryland". On 27 April 1674, Henry Brockman proved right to fiftyacres of land and on that same day he assigned his right to Capt.Thomas Salmon. The Orange County, Virginia Brockmans say Henry MarriedRebecca Salmon
(presumed to be the daughter of Thomas Salmon) in Maryland. TheSalmons and Brockmans later moved to King and Queen County, Virginia, then to Albemarle and Orange Counties in Virginia. Thomas Salmon ofMaryland lived in Albemarle County, Virginia and was a cooper bytrade. He
died in Culpeper County, Virginia.

BROCKMAN, Samuel II {I79} (b. ABT 1725, d. ABT 1790)
Given Name: Samuel
Note: Samuel Brockman, oldest son of Samuel and Mary, lived at the oldhomestead near Monorovia in St. Thomas Parrish, Orange CountyVirginia. This homestead consisted of 300 acres which his father hadbought from John Henderson. At the time of his father's death theentire estate consisted of 666 3/4 acres. Samuel sold a portion ofland to his brother William and in 1779 Samuel and William sold theentire tract to John White. William Brockman lived in Albemarle Co.,Va. Samuel died intestate about 1790 leaving 800 acres of landin Orange Co., Va. Samuel Brockman was too old for active Servicein the Revolutionary War but did render civil service. He mayhave held a commission in the militia for guarding Brook's bridge.Being a big producer, he sold
supplies, rendered voluntary service and had at least one horseimpressed for military service. Records show that Samuel and hisfather furnished supplies for the military.
The Minute Book shows that in Feb. 1776 a recommendation was made toappoint Samuel Brockman as a Lieutenant in the militia.

Samuel Brockman signed his name with a "B" between Samuel andBrockman and "his mark" over or under the "B". No one knows whatthe "B" stands for. He had a very good signature. The "B" may havebeen used to indicate a middle name or to "ok" a document. He couldhave had papers drawn up and used his mark for approval.

Book 3, page 246 of Orange Co. Will book shows an inventory of theestate of Samuel Brockman Sr. It was made 6 January 1792 by JohnStevens, Henry Tandy and James Duncan and shows an estate of "1146pounds, 13 shillings and 8 pence".

General index to land grants of Kentucky shows that Samuel Brockmanreceived a patent for 1000 acres in Fayette Co., KY. 26 Oct. 1787(book 13, pg. 616). After his death the court of Orange Co., Va.ordered the land sold.

GRAVES, Rebecca {I80} (b. 4 SEP 1735, d. 1814)
Given Name: Rebecca
Note: Recent discoveries indicate Rebecca was the second wife of SamuelBrockman and was the daughter of John and Susanna (Dicken) Graves.Theory is that Rebecca spelled her name Rebecker on the personalproperty wills and a Rebecker is named in the will of John Graves(1747) seems to indicate she was a Graves. She is recorded as beingborn in 1735.

There are natural barriers between the poor andrich--kinship to the Graves seems to have been hush hush. It iscurious that Rebecca never signed any legal documents, not even withan "x". An affidavit which she made was signed by W.J. Burris.Obviously she had some type of physical disability. She was a goodand kind person and raised her grand daughter, Nancy Crossthewaiteand possibly the children of her grandson Samuel.

Rebecca lived with William (probably her son) who seemed to receivepreferential treatment. John may also have been her son.

After the death of Rebecca, the remaining estate was appraisedin Dec. 1814 at 2,685 pounds. (Will Book 5, pg. 183)
