THE BRIGHT FAMILY
Several Brights lived in the same area of western Virginia whichmade Augusta County. Alexander Bright deeded land to Robert Green on20 April 1653. Erick and Tobias Bright are mentioned in thesettlement of the estate of John Patton, 17 February 1758. ErickBright sold some land to Joseph McDonald on 14 OCtober 1754. Samueland George Bright are mentioned in deeds recorded in the 1760's. In abiography of James A. Brite of Allen Co. KY, in Perrrin's History ofKentucky the following is stated: "James Brite was of Irishpatrentage, and was a farmer by occupation; he died in 1825. He wasthe son of Tobias Brite,a native of South Carolina, who came toKentucky in 1805, at his death in 1825, he was upward of 90 years."Tobias Brite of Virginia left Virginia around 1760. Perhaps they arethe same Tobias Bright?

October 1998 NOTES:
I have contacted and received answer from Blanche Colvin BRIGHTin Reedsport, OR. She married Edgar James Franklin Bright, grandsonof James Franklin BRIGHT-- who was the son of Buford and Rebecca andthe brother of Mahala and Mattie Bright...I wrote a letter addressedto her husband, Edgar Bright, after finding it on the Internet.Because of his birth year, I suspected he may be deceased, so Iaddressed my postcard to "Edgar Bright or Descendants". I got verylucky!
Blanche is a young 80, a widow, and had recently begun searchingthe family history of the Bright families. She has a lovely penmanshipand appears to be a lovely lady.
According to her, her husband's Aunt Beatrice, daughter of JamesFranklin, told her that one rainy afternoon when she was about 16,James Franklin said "Sis, get a pencil and paper. There were 16(sixteen) kids in our family and I want you to write them all down asI call them out". She proceeded to write down the names, spelling themas they sounded to her. Never before did anyone have information onJames Franklin Bright and Hannah Elizabeth Settles Bright. They weremarried 7 Feb 1882 in Calvary, Marion County, KY. (Hannah's firsthusband was Bill Hickinbotham--m. 13 Dec 1877. Bill died 22 May1878.)
The following is the list Blanche sent to me: (no dates of children)
"Buford Bright 13 Oct 1811 to 3 Apr 1882
Rebecca 19 Nov 1812 to 20 Dec 1864
1. Mary Ann Bright
2. Serrah Ann Bright
3. Nancy Ann Bright
4. Henry Paten Bright
5. William David Bright
6. Mandy Elizabeth Bright
7. McHaley Ann Bright (Mahala)
8. Martha Ann Bright
9. John Bright
10 .Millard Bright
11. Julia Ann Bright
12. James Franklin Bright
13. Elza Buford Bright
14. Vina Alice Bright
15. Ellen Bright
16. Rebecca R. Bright"
Note: Through personal knowledge of Lucy Benningfield, it is said that allthree of Hale Bright's children were fathered by John Wesley Newcomb, albeit they never married. John Wesley, called "Turk", did marryHale's sister Martha in 1889.
Note: There are no records to indicate that there were any children born ofthis marriage.
Note: James Franklin BRIGHT--son of Buford and Rebecca Short Bright
The story goes that about 1908, James Franklin and wife Hannah left KYto "go make a fortune pickin' cotton in Arkansas" and "never madeenough money to get back home". Thus the reason the descendants ofJames and Hannah resided in Arkansas and Tennessee.
Note: On an 1850 Taylor Co KY Census, William and Polly Shortt were worth$3660, a handsome amount.
