The race began and Alvin let his horse run flat out. His horse hit a wet spot and slid. Alvin came off and hit the ground all spread out. Everyone thought he was dead-but was ok except for his pride. Alvid said that was the way he intended to land and everyone had a big laugh. Dad won the blue ribbon, but said he really should't have as he couldn't keep his horse off the grass. (1a,b) 1674, 9 Apr: Lt. Col. John West obtained a court hearing to plead his
case in the matter of Mr. Samuell Arnoll conveying a "certaine platacon with
apputenances in New Kent County" to John West in his lifetime for 10,000
pounds of tobacco and caske. It was West's contention that John Wilson, who
had married Arnold's widow, had taken possession of the plantation,
"pretending the land was made over in Trust only to the sd. Lt. Coll. John
West." The court decided in favor of John West, and Wilson was ordered to
put West in possession of the land and buildings.
(1b) 1674, 28 Sep: John West had an order against the estate of Mr. Samuell
Arnold, which was in the hands of John Wilson, for 2166 pounds of tobacco
and caske, 900 pounds of muscavado sugar and one able negro. Wilson
appealed his case to the Assembky. Mr. David Anderson and John Pigge acted
as securities for Wilson's bond.
