influential agriculturists, resides in the Seventh district. . He was a church member for many years, as was his wife. They had thirteen children, He was the eldest, was but three years of age when his parents removed to Cumberland county. He spent his early days upon the homestead there and
assisted his father in managing it. When about twenty-five he began
farming for himself in the woods. During the war he also suffered great
hardships, and saw his capital melt away before the onslaughts of the
numerous foraging parties, but he got himself together after peace was
declared, went to work with renewed vigor, and is now able to declare
himself successful once more. While the war was in progress Mr. Farmer
assisted many men to get from the mountains to the Federal lines in
order to enlist, and was always an ardent sympathizer with the Federals.
He is a Republican in politics, and was formerly a Whig.
