J. Farmer was a private in Company I under Captain Jmes M
Riggs in the 27th Arkansas Confederate Infantry C.S.A., wich is also known
as 1st Regiment McBride's Brigade Arkansas Infantry and Shalers Regiment
Arkansas Infantry. A.J. enlisted 6 Jul 1862 at Richwood and appears on
muster rolls through 29 Feb 1864. Once in a battle he had to jump in the
river and swim across to escape the Union Soldiers and only avoided being
shot as musket balls whistled over head by hiding behind a log. No caputre
of parole records have been found. A.J. 's Confederate service record was
found as a part of the widow's pension application on file at the Arkansas
Confederat Home office. The 27th Arkansas Infantry was organized in the late
summer of 1862.

A.J. Farmer's father originally came from Ireland where he had commited a
prank and was being pursued by the law. To escape capture he went to the
boat docks wehre a shop was being loaded then carried something aboard the
ship and stowed away. When discovered he was made to work his way over to
America. He married a full blood Cherokee. Both names are unknown.

He was married to Rachel Caroline REED on 20 Sep 1856 in Itawamba Co. Miss.. Children were: Mary E. FARMER, George L. FARMER, Tisha Ward FARMER, Mary Fertime FARMER, Jane FARMER, William B. FARMER, Jackson FARMER, Charles Olben FARMER.
